The worst thing about a new generation of gaming systems is that we have to say goodbye to some fantastic titles.

Once in a while, however, we are lucky enough to get a remaster of our favorite games. And with the advancements in gaming developing, we are seeing more great games being brought back for the next-gen consoles(PS4/Xbox1).

In this list, we will take a look at our absolute favorite remastered games. It is not enough that the game was great on the old systems; the remaster has to have been successful. Seeing as sometimes, remastering isn’t all that great.

We will be excluding games such as GTA 5, that was initially made with the new consoles in mind.

This remaster should need no introduction. A complete remaster of one of the most iconic Playstation games of all time. The N. Sane Trilogy includes a full remaster of the first three Crash Bandicoot games. Crash Bandicoot, Cortex Strikes Back, and Warped.

Back when the first Crash Bandicoot was released, it was arguably the best 3D Platformer on the market, and now, with this remaster, it is back on top. It is a classic platformer that sees you progress through increasingly challenging levels, and if you enjoy the genre, you will enjoy this game.

The N. Sane Trilogy found the perfect balance between updating the gameplay and keeping what made the games special, to begin with. It feels like Crash Bandicoot and fans of this classic platformer will not be disappointed.

  • Metacritic Score: 80/100

8. Shadow of the Colossus

  • Platform of origin: Playstation 2
  • Remastered for: Playstation 4
  • Genre: Action-adventure

Buy From Amazon

Shadow of the Colossus is one of the most universally acclaimed action-adventure games of the early 2000s, and it’s Playstation 4 remaster is phenomenal.

The gameplay is a mixture of puzzles, large-scale action combat, and exploration. The main objective is to track down giant colossus’, discover their weaknesses, and defeat them in some incredibly cinematic and challenging boss fights. Shadow of the Colossus is an incredible adventure if you enjoy games with little-to-no handholding.

You play as the character of Wander in a place called The Forbidden Land. The plot starts somewhat mysterious as the player is told precious little in terms of backstory. This lets the player theorize and imagine for themselves as they explore this vast, beautiful world, which makes it incredibly immersive.

  • Metacritic Score: 91/100
  • User score: 7.9/10

7. BioShock: The Collection

  • Remastered for: Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC
  • Genre: First-person shooter action-adventure game

Buy From Amazon

Few game franchises are as revered as the BioShock trilogy and for a good reason. The story, universe, and gameplay of the BioShock games are incredible, and The Collection edition allows you to play through all BioShock games on the new generation of consoles.

It is a first-person shooter adventure game that takes you through the underwater city known as Rapture as you slowly uncover its secrets and story.

The world of Rapture has captured the hearts and minds of millions of gamers, and it is truly an epic adventure to go through, especially for the first time.

Final Verdict

If you are a fan of wonky sci-fi and dystopian worlds, then BioShock is a ride you cannot miss, and the updated graphics make the world even more immersive than ever before.

  • Metacritic Score: 84/100
  • User score: 8.4/10

6. Dark Souls Remastered

  • Platform of origin: Playstation 3, Xbox 360
  • Remastered for: Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC
  • Genre: Third-Person Action role-playing game

Buy From Amazon

The Souls series is one of the most beloved game franchises of the last decade with its focus on old school role-playing elements and challenging gameplay. It is also known as one of the hardest games of the modern era, and seeing it remastered for the new generation is incredible.

It is a classic dungeon crawler RPG in which you take on monsters and integrate bosses of increasing difficulty as you progress through the game. Fans of old RPGs like Baldurs Gate will love the Soul series, and the original Dark Souls is arguably the best of the series.

Final Verdict

So if you don’t like the hand-holding of modern games and want a real immersive challenge, then I would definitely recommend Dark Souls Remastered.

  • Metacritic Score: 84/100
  • User score: 6.7/10

5. God of War 3: Remastered

  • Platform of origin: Playstation 3
  • Remastered for: Playstation 4
  • Genre: Third-Person Action-Adventure

Buy From Amazon

Fans of the God of War series were thrilled when the remaster for the third installment was announced. It was, without a doubt, the most loved of the series, both by critics and gamers alike. Which is quite the accomplishment from a series like God of War.

God of War redefined the scale of which a game can unfold. Not because of the size of the map, it’s not even a sandbox game. But because of the battles and the cinematic way in which they are shown where never seen before. Each boss battle in this game is grander and more beautiful than the last. The antagonist is no bigger than an average human, making the fights against gods, the size of mountains a real sight to behold.

You play as Kratos, the son of Zeus and God of War, on his quest for revenge on his fellow gods. With each god you bring down, you will be empowered, and one step closer to the final battle against your father, Zeus. The game is filled with adrenaline-pumping action and a fresh, exciting take on Greek mythology.

Final Verdict

One of the best action games of all time, filled with compelling stories of mythology and fast-paced gameplay.

Unfortunately, this game is a Playstation exclusive, meaning it is not available for Xbox owners.

  • Metacritic Score: 92/100
  • User score: 8.7/10

4. Assassin’s Creed – The Ezio Collection

  • Game: Assassin’s Creed 2, Assassin’s Creed 2: Brotherhood, Assassin’s Creed 3: Revelations
  • Platform of origin: Playstation 3/Xbox 360
  • Remastered for: Playstation 4 / Xbox One
  • Genre: Third-Person Action-Adventure

Buy From Amazon

Assassin’s Creed has not been the same as of late. With the success of the early games, it seems that Ubisoft has turned it into a money cow. Which is a real shame, since the second and third installments were true masterpieces. The first Assassin’s Creed quickly became a cult favorite but was just short of being a real triple-A title. With the release of the second game, all the issues of the first game were not only fixed but improved significantly. The graphics were breathtaking, the setting was immersive and grand, and the storyline was phenomenal.

You follow to stories in this epic trilogy. Part of the story takes place in the present day time, where you play as Desmond, the bartender. Desmond was kidnapped by a huge firm, because of his DNA. This is because he is a direct descendant to some of the most potent assassins throughout history. The big overall plotline is ‘Templars vs. Assassins’, whereas the Templars have been using money, power, and influence to control the world for a thousand years. The Assassin’s Creed is their nemesis, constantly defying them.

The present-day Templars use a machine called the Animus to see history through the eyes of Desmond’s ancestors. This is where most of the game takes place.

Once inside the Animus, it takes place in Italy during the renaissance. Where you play as the young ladies man Ezio, who lives a carefree life, but his entire life is quickly turned on his head. This forces him on a path of vengeance and murder.

Final Verdict

The games do feel a little outdated, especially the first one. This is, however, mostly gameplay-wise, the story and graphics are still great and makes you forget about the minor gameplay hiccups.

  • Metacritic Score: 91/100, 90/100, 80/100
  • User score: 8.6/10, 8.2/10, 7.5/10

3. Uncharted – The Nathan Drake Collection

  • Game: Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted: Among Thieves, Uncharted: Drake’s Deception
  • Platform of origin: Playstation 3
  • Remastered for: Playstation 4
  • Genre: Third-Person Action-Adventure Shooter

Buy From Amazon

This epic collection should need no introduction. The Uncharted series is one of the most widely beloved gaming series of all time. This is greatly due to their outstanding writing, storytelling, and character development. They are commonly referred to as the best story-driven games of all time, and with good reason.

As opposed to Assassin’s Creed, this franchise gets better and better with each new installment. And the latest game, Uncharted: A Thief’s End, is nothing short of a masterpiece. It’s quite simple: If you haven’t played the Uncharted series, you HAVE to get this. Games like these do not come very often, and they are a real work of art.

You follow protagonist Nathan Drake as go goes to uncharted areas of the world. He starts as a simple treasure hunter on a mission, but the story quickly makes the game about so much more.

Final Verdict

The first game does feel very outdated in terms of gameplay. But after an hour or so, you will be pulled in by the story and easily see past its age.

We dare to say that this is the best-remastered collection ever made. If you have not played the first games or maybe want the story recapped before playing ‘A Thief’s End,’ then this is a must-have.

  • Metacritic Score: 86/100
  • User score: 8.1/10

2. Skyrim Remastered

  • Platform of origin: Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC
  • Remastered for: Playstation 4, Xbox One
  • Genre: Open World RPG

Buy From Amazon

Fans of the Elder Scrolls series everywhere rejoiced when Skyrim remastered was announced. One of the best open-world RPG’s of all time, if not the best. This is greatly due to the amount of freedom that players are given in this beautiful world. The game grants you an amazing setting and hundreds of storylines to explore, and the rest is up to you.

You are given the main quest, which revolves around the return of dragons in the world of Tamriel. Where you have to find a way to become the Dragonborn and defeat the god dragon Alduin, but this is merely a fraction of the game, as there are so many great stories you can take part in.

Be whoever you want to be

First, you need to create your character. You can choose from an array of races and subraces, gender, appearance, etc. There are no classes since you can freely choose to be whatever you want to be.

Do you want to be a straight-up warrior? A spell-caster? Assassin or any mixture that you see fit. The vast skill tree allows you to be precisely the character you want to be. It does not end there, however. If you’re going to be a great magician, you can seek out the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and be trained in the magical arts. If you want to be an assassin, you can try to find the assassins guild and plan murder and schemes that will affect the entire world of Tamriel. But even as a warrior or assassin, you can still seek out the magic school, and that is the whole point. At no time are you locked into being something you don’t want to be.

There is also a civil war going on in Tamriel, which makes for some fantastic storylines, where you get to choose which side you want to be on. This game has endless directions in which the story can go, and it all comes down to your choices.

Final Verdict

This beautiful world has to be experienced, especially on a great monitor or 4k tv.

There is one problem with this remastered version, however. Bethesda has almost tried to pass it off as a new game, which means it is quite expensive for a remastered. This is also why the remastered version has gotten mixed reviews by gamers, but if you haven’t played Skyrim before and you are a fan of RPG’s, then this is a must-have.

  • Metacritic Score: 94/100
  • User score: 8.1/10

1. The Last of Us Remastered

  • Platform of origin: Playstation 3
  • Remastered for: Playstation 4
  • Genre: Action-adventure survival horror third-person shooter

Buy From Amazon

Naughty Dog did it again. They managed to create a new universe with new main characters, but with an equally compelling story as the Uncharted games. One of the critically and user-acclaimed titles from the Playstation 3, made it onto the PS4 in style. In my opinion, The Last of Us Remastered is the most successful remaster out there. It is a graphical masterpiece that only improved on the original, both in terms of gameplay and looks.

The story is engaging from the first minute, the characters are deep and exciting, and the setting is beautiful and horrific at the same time. You play mainly as Joel, whose background story I do not want to spoil for anyone. But the games start with the day that the zombie apocalypse begins. In this horrific and dangerous world, Joel meets a young girl named Ellie, and this mismatch has to come together to survive.

This is not some cheap zombie flick, but an epic tale. 95% of anything zombie-related, be it movies or games, tend to have a pretty horrible story element. The Last of us, however, manages to have characters and storytelling on par with some of the best movies out there.

Final Verdict

If you haven’t played this incredible story yet, you simply have to try it. It is an emotional rollercoaster wrapped in great gameplay and beautiful graphics. We truly have nothing bad to say about this remastered gem, and we encourage anyone and everyone to try it out.

With the announcement of the second installment of Last of US, there is, even more, the reason to play it.

  • Metacritic Score: 95/100
  • User score: 9.1/10
